Improv For Life(SM) is based on two simple ideas - that social skills can be improved through practice, and that improvisational comedy exercises can provide an excellent space in which to practice them. The idea for Improv For Life(SM) began to take shape while I was teaching improvisational comedy at Improv Boston. During a few classes, I noticed that people were taking improv with the intention of developing as people rather than as performers. And I noticed that while a class dedicated to performing can help such development, it's not the ideal place because personal development just isn't the focus, and any attention given to it feels like a waste of time to the students that are there to learn to perform (and rightly so!). I approached the BCAE with my idea for a class: Improv For Life, and after three semesters, decided I wanted to add more classes and needed more flexibility than such a large institution could allow.
My name is Erik Volkert, and I'm the creator of Improv For Life. I perform and teach improvisational comedy at Improv Boston along with other locations in New England. I began performing improv with Umass Amherst's own Mission: IMPROVable, and when I moved to Boston in 2001, began performing with Improv Boston. While at Improv Boston, I've performed with The Tribe, Improv Asylum, and have been cast in many different productions at Improv Boston including Theatersports, Quest, Writer's Block, Bluescreen, Pirate Lives, and many more, and studied under many different teachers including Joe Bill, Mick Napier, Shaun Landry, Keith Johnstone, and Will Luera.
